They could hear the fighting before they even got there.
Conan Higgins, retired JTAC with U.S. Air Force Special Operations, recalls a mission where enemy fire came from both sides of the river toward an island. His team engaged from the western side, the direction they were coming from, and took the space. In contact with a combat controller on the island alongside a downed crew and the QRF, all anyone could do was stay low, no cover, no trees, just the rotor mast sticking up for anyone to see.
He compares it to a scene straight out of Vietnam, enemy artillery pulled up into the mountains, firing straight down on them.
